What the Steel Mesh Weight Calculator does
This tool gives the weight of welded reinforcing mesh (steel fabric) before you order it. Choose the mesh type, set the wire diameters and spacing and the panel size, and it returns the weight per panel, the weight per square metre, and the total for your number of panels, in kilograms and pounds. Add a price per kilo and it estimates the cost too. It is made for contractors, steel fixers, estimators and buyers working with slab and screed reinforcement.
The result is exact for a welded wire grid: every wire is a round steel bar, so the weight is pure geometry rather than a looked-up figure. The calculated Q or R designation is shown so you can match it to a standard fabric.
How to use it
- Pick the Mesh type: Square (Q) presets 150/150 mm spacing, Rectangular (R) presets 150/250 mm, or Custom for your own.
- Enter the longitudinal and transverse wire diameters (mm) and spacing (mm).
- Set the panel length and width in metres. The default 5.00 × 2.15 m is the standard panel.
- Set the number of panels for a full order.
- Read the weight in kilograms and pounds, with the weight per panel, per m² and the mesh code below.
If a value cannot give a real result it shows a short message instead of a broken number.

Frequently asked questions
- How is welded steel mesh weight calculated?
- Mesh is a welded grid of round steel wires, so the weight is exact geometry. The tool counts the longitudinal wires (panel width ÷ spacing, plus one) and the transverse wires (panel length ÷ spacing, plus one), multiplies each set by its wire weight per metre, which is (π/4 × d²) × 7.85 g/cm³, and adds them. Multiply by the number of panels for the total.
- What is the difference between Q and R mesh?
- Q (square) mesh has the same wire and spacing in both directions, usually 150 mm, for two-way slabs. R (rectangular) mesh has stronger, closer longitudinal wires (150 mm) and lighter, wider-spaced transverse wires (250 mm) for one-way slabs. Pick the type to preset the spacing, or choose Custom to enter your own.
- What does the Q or R code mean?
- The number after Q or R is the longitudinal steel area per metre of width, in mm² per metre. For example Q188 is Ø6 wire at 150 mm spacing, which gives 188 mm²/m. The tool shows this code so you can match a standard fabric designation.
- What panel size should I use?
- The standard Turkish mesh panel is 5.00 m long by 2.15 m wide, which is the default. Change the length and width for cut panels or different stock sizes, and set the number of panels for a full order.
- How accurate is the result?
- It is the exact theoretical weight of the wire grid based on the nominal diameters you enter. Real fabric carries a small rolling tolerance and edge overhang, so a weighed panel can differ by a small percentage.
