What the Metal Weight Calculator does
This tool tells you how much a piece of metal weighs before you cut, buy or ship it. Pick a shape (sheet, bar, tube, pipe or angle), type its dimensions and length, choose the material, and it returns the weight of one piece, the total weight for your quantity, and, if you enter a price per kilo, the cost. It is built for fabricators, welders, machinists, buyers and anyone pricing or planning a metal job.
Every result is pure physics: the volume of the shape multiplied by the density of the metal. Nothing is uploaded and there is no rounding guesswork; the same dimensions always give the same answer.
How to use it
- Choose a Shape (for example Round bar or Rectangular tube). The dimension fields change to match.
- Pick the measurement unit (mm, cm, m, in or ft) and enter the dimensions and the Length in that unit.
- Set the Quantity if you have more than one identical piece.
- Choose a Material, or select Custom density and type your own value in g/cm³.
- Read the weight in kilograms and pounds. Add a price per kg to also see the total cost.
Decimal commas work too, so you can type 2,5 or 2.5. If a value cannot give a real result, for example a wall thicker than the pipe itself, the tool shows a short message instead of a broken number.

Frequently asked questions
- How does the metal weight calculator work?
- It multiplies the volume of the part by the density of the material. You pick a shape, enter its dimensions and length, and choose a material (or type a custom density in g/cm³). The tool computes the cross-section area, multiplies by length to get the volume, then multiplies by density to get the weight. Quantity simply multiplies the result.
- Which shapes and profiles are supported?
- Sheet and plate, round bar, square bar, hexagonal bar, flat bar, round tube and pipe, square tube, rectangular tube, and equal and unequal angle (L). For named structural profiles like IPE, HEA, HEB or UPN, use the dedicated steel profile weight calculator.
- What density should I use for steel, aluminum or stainless?
- The presets use standard values: structural steel 7.85, stainless 304 7.93, stainless 316 8.0, aluminum 2.70, copper 8.96, brass 8.5 g/cm³. If your alloy differs, pick Custom density and type the exact figure your supplier gives, since small density changes scale the weight directly.
- Can it show the price as well as the weight?
- Yes. Enter a price per kilogram (or per pound) and a currency, and the tool multiplies it by the total weight to estimate the cost. Leave the price blank if you only need the weight.
- Why does my real part weigh slightly more than the result?
- The calculator uses ideal geometry. Real bars have rolling tolerances, and welded or rolled profiles have corner fillets that add a little material, so a measured weight can differ by a few percent. For mill-certified figures always check your supplier's data sheet.
