What the VAT Calculator does
This tool works out VAT (value added tax) or sales tax in two directions. Give it a price before tax and it tells you the gross total. Give it a tax-inclusive price and it works backwards to the net figure. It is handy for freelancers writing invoices, shop owners pricing products, accountants checking receipts, and anyone who needs to know how much of a total is actually tax.
For every calculation you get three lines: the net amount (before VAT), the VAT portion on its own, and the gross amount (including VAT). That makes it easy to copy the exact number you need onto an invoice or expense claim.
How to use it
- Type the figure into the Amount field (it starts at 100 as an example).
- Set the VAT rate in the percent field. The default is 20%, but you can put in any rate you like.
- Choose a Mode: “Add VAT (net to gross)” when your amount excludes tax, or “Remove VAT (gross to net)” when your amount already includes tax.
- Click Calculate to see the net, VAT, and gross broken out.
- Change any field to compare rates or test another price right away.
Why calculate VAT here
It is quick: results appear the moment you press Calculate, with no page reloads. It is private, because the maths happens on your own device and nothing is uploaded. And it is free, with no sign-up and no limits. The reverse mode saves the awkward step of remembering to divide by 1.20 instead of multiplying, which is where manual VAT sums usually go wrong.
One tip: VAT figures are rounded for display, so for a formal tax return always reconcile against your accounting software. This calculator is meant for everyday estimates and quick checks rather than official filing.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I remove VAT from a gross price?
- Switch the Mode field to "Remove VAT (gross to net)", type the VAT-inclusive amount into the Amount field, set your VAT rate, then click Calculate. The tool divides the gross by 1 plus the rate and shows the net price, the VAT portion, and the original gross.
- How is VAT added to a net amount?
- Leave Mode on "Add VAT (net to gross)", enter the price before tax, and set the rate (the default is 20%). The result shows the gross total, how much of it is VAT, and the net you started with.
- Can I use any VAT or sales tax rate?
- Yes. The VAT rate field accepts any number, so it works for 5%, 7.5%, 19%, 20%, or whatever rate applies to you. It is not limited to a single country's rate.
- Are my numbers sent anywhere?
- No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored, or shared, and you do not need an account.
