What the Tip Calculator does
This is a quick way to figure out a gratuity and split a restaurant bill without doing mental math at the table. Enter the bill, pick a tip from the preset buttons or the slider, and use the people stepper to say how many are sharing the cost. Everything updates live, so you instantly see a big Each pays figure along with cards for the tip amount, the total, the tip per person, and the total per person. There is even a round-up option to bump each share to the next whole amount. It is handy for dinners out, group lunches, bar tabs, taxi rides, or anywhere you split a check with friends.
How to use it
- In Bill amount, type the total on the check.
- Set the number of people with the People stepper: tap minus or plus, or type the count. Leave it at 1 if you are covering the whole thing.
- Choose a tip with the preset buttons (10%, 15%, 18%, or 20%), or drag the slider or type a custom percentage for anything in between.
- Optionally switch on Round up per person to round each person’s share up to the next whole amount.
- Read the results as they update instantly, with no button to press: the big Each pays figure, plus Tip amount, Total, Tip per person, and Total per person.
Change any input and every figure recalculates on the spot, so you can compare an 18% tip against a 20% one just by tapping a different preset.
Why use it here
It is free, there is no app to download, and you never create an account. The calculation happens right in your browser, so the figures you enter stay on your device. Because it recalculates the moment you change anything, there is no Calculate button to hunt for while the waiter waits.
If you want a round per-person number, flip on Round up per person or nudge the tip up or down a point and watch the Each pays figure settle on an even amount. That makes splitting easy when everyone is paying cash. Keep in mind this is a convenience tool for everyday use, not financial advice, so double-check the receipt before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I split the tip and bill between several people?
- Use the People stepper to set how many are sharing the bill: tap minus or plus, or type the number. The calculator divides the total (bill plus tip) evenly and shows what each person pays under "Each pays", with separate cards for tip per person and total per person.
- How do the tip presets work?
- Tap a preset button for 10%, 15%, 18%, or 20% and the tip applies instantly. If you want a different figure, use the slider or type a custom percentage; either way the results update as you go.
- What does the round up per person option do?
- Turn on the "Round up per person" toggle and each person's share is rounded up to the next whole amount, which is handy when everyone pays cash or you want to leave a little extra. The calculator then shows the new total for the whole table.
- What tip percentage should I choose?
- That is up to you and local custom. In the US, 15 to 20 percent is common for sit-down service, which is why those presets are there. The percentage is applied to whatever you enter as the bill.
- Does the tip get calculated on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
- It uses whatever you put in the "Bill amount" field. If you want to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, enter that figure; if you prefer to tip on the after-tax total, enter that instead.
- Is the tip calculator free and private?
- Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and the math runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server.
