What this tool does

This Savings Goal Calculator tells you how long it will take to reach a target amount based on what you already have and how much you put aside each month. It helps anyone saving toward something specific, such as an emergency fund, a vacation, a deposit, a new laptop, or a holiday budget. Rather than guessing, you get a clear count of the months needed and a rough number of years, so you can decide whether to adjust your plan.

How to use it

  1. Enter the amount you are aiming for in the Savings goal field.
  2. Type how much you have already put away in the Current savings field.
  3. Enter the amount you can set aside each month in the Monthly contribution field.
  4. Select Calculate to see the number of months to reach your goal and roughly how many years that is.

A quick worked example

Say your Savings goal is 10000, your Current savings is 2000, and your Monthly contribution is 400. You still need 8000, and at 400 per month that takes 20 months, or roughly 1.7 years. If 20 months feels too long, raise your Monthly contribution and recalculate to watch the timeline shrink.

Frequently asked questions

How does the calculator work out the timeline?
It subtracts your current savings from your goal, then divides the remaining amount by your monthly contribution. The result is the number of months you need, which it also shows as an approximate number of years.
What if I have already saved more than my goal?
If your current savings already meet or exceed the target, you have reached the goal and the timeline is zero. You can lower the goal or raise it to keep planning.
Does this account for interest on my savings?
No, this is a straight contribution calculator and assumes no interest or returns. For growth over time with a rate, try a compound interest calculator instead.
